Michael Porter Jr.'s public voice was shaped by his own medical file. Three back surgeries before his career had properly begun taught him how much of healing is mental, and he has chosen to talk about that openly. More recently he has used his platform to draw attention to children harmed by trafficking overseas.
Talking About the Mental Side
Porter works with a mental coach and speaks candidly about journaling, faith and the emotional side of being an athlete. He has argued that the mental and emotional side of health deserves the same attention players give to physical training, because it is what carries them through failure and pressure.
Three Surgeries, One Long Road Back
Back surgeries in 2018, 2019 and 2021 repeatedly stopped his young career, at times leaving him barely able to move. He has shared what those long rehabilitations taught him about patience, about the connection between stress and physical pain, and about asking for help, in the hope it reaches others living with chronic pain.
Seeing Trafficking Up Close
Porter traveled to the Philippines with International Justice Mission, an organization that protects people in poverty from violence and trafficking. There he met children who had been rescued from exploitation, and he described putting smiles on their faces as an experience that meant everything to him.
Using the Microphone
Back home, Porter spoke publicly about what he had seen, calling child trafficking an under-discussed crime and urging more people to support the work against it. It fits his stated belief that a platform is best used to serve and inspire other people.
