Clint Capela's giving comes straight from his own childhood. Raised in Geneva by a single mother and spending seven years in foster care himself, he built his outreach in Houston around the children who are living what he lived: kids in foster care and kids being raised by single parents.
He Has Been There
When Capela was six, his mother, a Congolese immigrant raising three sons alone in Geneva with no family nearby, turned to a government program for help. Clint and his older brother were placed in a group home outside the city, and he spent seven years in foster care. He has never forgotten it, and it is the reason his giving takes the shape it does.
Launching the CC15 Foundation
Capela founded the CC15 Foundation in Houston to give children in foster care and children of low-income single parents the same opportunities and experiences available to their peers: support, resources and moments that feel normal.
The Celebrity Slam
The foundation's first major event, a Celebrity Slam at the JW Marriott Houston Downtown on March 29, 2019, drew 180 guests, including teammates James Harden, Chris Paul and P.J. Tucker, and raised $215,000 for single-parent families.
Listening at DePelchin
Capela spent time with young people at DePelchin Children's Center, Houston's foster care and adoption agency, sitting with them and sharing his own story. Staff there said he was the only celebrity to visit the agency in its nearly 30-year history. He later appeared alongside DePelchin youth in Nike's Move As 1 film.
Backpacks for the School Year
At the foundation's back-to-school day, more than 30 children from single-parent households received backpacks full of school supplies, a small head start on the year from someone who knows what it is to have little.
Celebrity Bowling Bash
Capela hosted a Celebrity Bowling Bash with his Rockets teammates, children benefiting from the foundation among the guests, and raised close to $100,000 more for the CC15 Foundation's work.
