LeBron James built the most complete community operation in modern sport, and he built it in the city that raised him. Through the LeBron James Family Foundation, founded in 2004, his promise to Akron's children grew from bikes and backpacks into a public school, housing for families, and a community house that trains, employs and feeds the neighbourhood, all of it organised around one idea: a promise kept, year after year, until a child graduates.
The Foundation
The LeBron James Family Foundation invests in at-risk children and families in Akron, Ohio, LeBron's hometown. Its model is deliberately long term: the foundation stays with its students from elementary school through graduation and into college or a trade, supporting the whole family around the child, not just the student.
The I PROMISE Program
What began as mentorship and incentives for Akron Public Schools students became a full support system: students who stay in the program and meet its standards earn full-tuition college scholarships, while their parents get access to education, job and family support of their own.
The I PROMISE School
A public elementary school opened with Akron Public Schools for the city's most at-risk students. It runs longer days and a longer year, provides free uniforms and meals, a food pantry for families, and GED and job support for parents, on the principle that a child cannot learn if the family is in crisis.
I PROMISE Village
Transitional housing for I PROMISE families who need a stable home to stay in school. The Village gives families a safe place to live while they get back on their feet, removing the single biggest obstacle between a child and the classroom.
House Three Thirty
A community hub in the heart of Akron, named for the city's 330 area code: job training and financial education, community dining, event and retail space, and a museum of LeBron's own story, designed to create local jobs and keep the neighbourhood's money and pride in the neighbourhood.
Showing Up In Person
LeBron reads to the students, surprises classrooms and hosts the families his foundation serves, including reading his own children's book, I Promise, to young readers, a moment captured in the Kindness Engine's NBA Generosity library.
