Klay Thompson's giving runs through his family. The Thompson Family Foundation, run by Klay with his parents and brothers, works for young people in two places the family calls home: the Bay Area, where Klay built his career, and the Bahamas, where his father Mychal was born and where Klay spent childhood summers.
Points With a Purpose
When wildfires tore through Northern California's North Bay in October 2017, Thompson pledged $1,000 for every point he scored across a three game homestand. He scored 69 points, and with sponsor and fan matching the pledge grew to more than $5,200 per point, raising $360,374 for the North Bay fire relief fund.
Hurricane Dorian Relief
After Hurricane Dorian devastated Abaco and Grand Bahama in September 2019, Thompson announced that every dollar raised by the foundation's celebrity golf tournament would go to relief efforts, and that the foundation would match the proceeds. The foundation also matched fellow Bahamian rooted player Buddy Hield's $100,000 donation toward restoration.
Staying After the Cameras Left
The family's help did not end with the announcement. Foundation staff travelled to New Providence to deliver supplies to people displaced by the storm, and family members spoke with Bahamian students about school and perseverance while the long work of rebuilding continued.
A Family Operation
The Thompson Family Foundation is exactly that: Klay, his father Mychal, a former number one draft pick and two time NBA champion, his mother Julie, and his brothers Mychel and Trayce all take part. Its signature fundraiser, a celebrity golf tournament, channels the family's sporting connections into support for youth and community causes.
Roots in the Islands
The Thompsons have been fixtures of Bahamian basketball for years, including the long running Jeff Rodgers summer basketball camp, where generations of island kids have learned the game. For Klay, giving in the Bahamas is not a photo opportunity. It is family business, carried out where his father grew up.
Klay's own announcement of the Bahamas relief effort, posted as Dorian's damage became clear in September 2019.
