Kevin Durant grew up in Prince George's County, Maryland, raised by his mother Wanda, and his charity work has always pointed back at kids standing where he stood. Through his foundation, founded in 2012, he builds the two things he believes change a life: a good education and a safe place to play.
The Foundation
The Kevin Durant Charity Foundation aims to enrich the lives of at-risk youth from low-income backgrounds through educational, athletic and social programs. Durant built it with his mother, Wanda, whose years as a single parent shaped its focus on children and families.
The Durant Center
In his hometown, Durant committed $10 million over ten years to bring College Track, the college-completion program, to Prince George's County. College Track at the Durant Center, which opened in 2019 as the program's first East Coast home, walks local students from ninth grade all the way to a college degree with tutoring, mentoring and scholarship support.
A Million Dollars After the Tornado
When a massive tornado tore through Moore, Oklahoma in May 2013, Durant pledged $1 million through his foundation to the American Red Cross, among the first and largest gifts to the relief effort. Days later he walked the damaged neighborhoods in person to sit with survivors and lift spirits.
Build It and They Will Ball
The foundation's flagship court program, run with Nike, builds and renovates basketball courts in low-income communities around the world, from Oakland and Redwood City to new courts in India. By the end of 2018 the program had fully renovated some 20 courts, giving young players a safe home court of their own.
Standing With Homeless Students
Durant has been a major donor to Positive Tomorrows, Oklahoma's only elementary school built specifically for homeless children. His foundation has also directed hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to organizations across the country working to end youth homelessness.
Backing Bowie State
Through the Durant Family Foundation, Durant has supported Bowie State University, Maryland's oldest historically Black university. The funding helps renovate athletics facilities and back scholarships, extending his education work from high school students to college athletes.
