Al Horford was born in Puerto Plata, and his giving has always pointed home. Courts, clinics and disaster relief in the Dominican Republic sit at the center of his work, alongside healthy-living programs for students in the United States. He is a quiet, steady presence in both places.
Courts Back Home
Horford partnered with Banco Popular to build three basketball courts in the Dominican Republic, giving young players in his home country safe, lasting places to play, gather and dream a little bigger.
Basketball Without Borders Comes Home
When Basketball Without Borders Americas was held in Santo Domingo in 2015, Horford and his family joined Jr. NBA clinics for local children, and NBA Cares refurbished two courts at Club El Almirante, a club home to more than 200 young players.
$500,000 for Pandemic Relief
As the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the season, Horford donated $500,000 to relief efforts in the Dominican Republic and in every United States region tied to his journey: Michigan, Gainesville in Florida, Atlanta, Boston and Philadelphia.
Healthy Habits for Students
Horford has partnered with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to promote healthy eating and physical activity in schools across the United States, and he has lent his time to outreach efforts such as Make-A-Wish. The league has honored him with NBA Cares Community Assist recognition multiple times.
Bringing the Trophy Home
After winning the 2024 NBA championship with Boston and becoming the first Dominican-born player to lift the trophy, Horford carried it home to the Dominican Republic. He ran basketball clinics there alongside Celtics coaches and was received with one of his country's highest national honors.
