Nikola Jokic

Nikola Jokic

Jokic Brothers Foundation
HEALTH & WELLNESS

Nikola Jokic may be the most private superstar in basketball, and his giving matches his personality: quiet, local and mostly undocumented. What can be seen is in Sombor, the small Serbian town he returns to every summer, where he has rebuilt the court he grew up on and poured his family's support into the hometown club where he started.

THE WORK
SOMBOR, SERBIA

The Court Where He Grew Up

Beside Dositej Obradovic, the primary school Jokic attended, sits the outdoor court where he learned the game. It used to be cracked asphalt with standard playground hoops. Jokic paid to remodel it with a synthetic playing surface and professional-style basket stanchions with plexiglass backboards, and a four-story mural of him now looks over the court. Every summer he is back on it, playing 3-on-3 with friends from home who happily foul him and refuse to let him win.

SOMBOR

Backing KK Joker

KK Joker is the Sombor club where Jokic played as a boy, and he and his family have sponsored and helped run it. The family has invested heavily in its home, Mostonga Hall, refurbishing the gym, redoing the locker rooms and offices, and upgrading the court to the standards Serbia's top division requires. Jokic trains there every offseason, in a locker marked MVP beneath a photograph of him hugging his brothers, Strahinja and Nemanja.

EVERY OFFSEASON

Home, Not Headlines

When the NBA season ends, Jokic goes home. He cycles to the stables to see his horses, works out at seven in the morning, and spends his days among neighbors who treat him as one of their own and protect his privacy fiercely. For Sombor's young players, the best player in the world is not a rumor; he is at the local gym, on the local court, living proof of where their town can lead.

QUIETLY

Help Without an Audience

Jokic almost never publicizes generosity, and friends say much of it is deliberately anonymous: envelopes of cash left at friends' homes or workplaces when no one is there, then denied if anyone asks. The full record of his giving likely exists only in the memories of the people in Sombor he has helped, which appears to be exactly how he wants it.

THE ARC
2014 — Drafted 41st overall by the Denver Nuggets, famously asleep at home in Sombor when his name was called during the broadcast.
2021 — Wins his first NBA MVP award. Back home in Sombor, the schoolyard court he paid to remodel, overlooked by a four-story mural of him, is already the town's gathering place.
2022 — Wins a second consecutive MVP award, while his family continues to invest in KK Joker and its Mostonga Hall home.
2023 — Leads Denver to its first NBA championship. In Sombor, the Jokic family's upgrades to KK Joker's facility, including a court brought up to top-division standards, keep local basketball thriving.
